The requirement for safe access between floor levels was highlighted by a HSE prosecution last week when a site worker fell from height. A worker was working on site on a new build house when he fell through an open stairwell and suffered a fractured skull and ribs as a result. Access to the first floor was gained by a ladder at the stairwell opening which had been covered with temporary boards. To allow access to the first floor, the boards were slid apart. The man fell through the stairwell opening onto the ground floor below as lifted up one of the temporary boards and stepped forward.

Using a temporary staircase provides easier, safer and quicker access than using a site ladder for access between levels.
